After graduating mathematics at the University of Zagreb, Croatia, in 1987 she received her PhD in operations research from the University of British Columbia, Canada. While working as a full time professor at Stony Brook University, Skorin-Kapov studied philosophy, receiving her PhD in philosophy in 2007. Being a perennial student by choice, in 2009 she enrolled in the graduate program in art history and criticism at Stony Brook University and received her third PhD in 2014... She is the author of a monography on Aronofsky's filmography entitled Darren Aronofsky's Films and the Fragility of Hope, and the author of a book on the phenomenology of surprise entitled The Aesthetics of Desire and Surprise: Phenomenology and Speculation)
