He was born 05 August 1921 in Port of Spain, Trinidad; graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London (1951); holds a BA and MFA from Yale University School of Drama (1958-1962) anda DFA from Yale University (1966). He taught at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica (1953-1958, 1962) and at the City University of New York (1967-1968); was appointed professor at Dartmouth College (1968-2003); was named Dartmouth's John D. Willard Professor of Drama and Oratory (1976) and received Dartmouth College Presidential Medal for Outstanding Leadership and Achievement (1991). His last book, A History of African American Theatre won Theatre Library Association's George Freedley Memorial Award (2003). He died 15 September 2003)
