Pope was born in Abilene on April 18, 1913. He graduated form Abilene High School and enrolled at Abilene Christian College, graduaing in 1934. He attended law school at the University of Texas, graduating in 1937. A At 33, he was appointed to serve as district judge in Nueses County. He was elected to the 4th Court of Appeals in San Antonio and served until 1964 when he was elected to the Texas Supreme Court, In 1982 he was appointed chief justice. Pope retired in 1985. He was a former trustee of Abilene Christian University.)
