In 1808 they came under control of Université de France, which was established as the central administrative body for university education. Under this system, the country was divided into districts, each served by an academy under the Université. Faculties in Paris were administered by the Académie de Paris. The Université de Paris was reestablished in 1896 as independent body. The Law of 1968 reforming higher education in France provided for the division of the Université de Paris into a number of separate entities, which began to function about 1970)
