Often (mistakenly) called Hans Sebald Beham in modern literature, the artist signed his work "Sebald Beham" (figs. 1, 2, 8), the name also used in contemporary documents connected with his activities. Sebald's monogram may unwittingly have supported the modern misunderstanding of his name. Because the Franconian dialect of his hometown of Nuremberg pronounced a "b" as "p," he used the monogram "HSP" until 1531. After moving to Frankfurt, he used "HSB." The "H" appears to indicate the second syllable of his last name (Beham), in the manner of the "G" in the "AG" monogram of his contemporary Heinrich Aldegrever (1502-1561), who was active in Westphalia. It is also possible that Beham wanted to create a monogram that was clearly distinct from the "BB" of his brother Barthel.) - https://jhna.org/articles/sebald-beham-entrepreneur-printmaker-painter/
