After joining the Confederate Army in 1861, he and twelve other soldiers entered Newburgh, Indiana with a stovepipe mounted on a wagon disguised as a cannon, which earned him the nickname "Stovepipe" Johnson. Was permanently blinded by friendly fire in the Battle of Grubb's Crossroads in Kentucky in August 1864 and continued to serve in the Confederate Army until the April 1865 surrender. Returned to Texas after the war where he founded the Texas Mining Improvement Company and founded the city of Marble Falls in 1887. Published his Civil War memoirs. Died in Burnet, Texas)
