Z︠H︡ytomyrsʹka oblastʹ (Ukraine)

found: Rad. ent︠s︡ykl. ist. Ukraïny:v. 2, p. 143-144 (Z︠H︡ytomyrsʹka oblastʹ historically was part of Kievan Rusʹ during the 10th to 12th centuries. In 1362 the territory was conquered by Lithuania and by 1569 had become part of Poland. After the 1793 second partition of Poland, this territory was reunited with Russia. From 1793 to 1797 it had become part of the Volynsʹke namisnyt︠s︡tvo [no publs. in LC data base] until 09-19-1797 when the namisnyt︠s︡tvo was replaced by the Volynsʹka hubernii︠a︡. In 1804 the center of this province was Z︠H︡ytomyr. During 1918 most of the Volynsʹka hubernii︠a︡ was at first seized by Austria-Hungary, but with the peace treaty of 1921 many of the western provinces were ceded to Poland. During the 1920's the remaining parts of the Volynsʹka hubernii︠a︡ under Ukrainian control were converted into okruhs which by 1930 had themselves been abolished. In 1932 the Kyïvsʹka oblastʹWas established, and this oblastʹ included the present-day territory of Z︠H︡ytomyrsʹka oblastʹ. On 09-22-1937 the Z︠H︡ytomyrsʹka oblastʹ itself was established)
