He became a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, was a State senator from 1801 to 1808, and shortly afterwards obtained the clerkship of the House of Delegates and held it during the remainder of his life. For many years he was also reporter of the decisions of the Supreme Court of Appeals in Virginia; From time to time he wrote verse, but he made no effort to give it publicity; and his last work, a composition which in some parts indeed approaches greatness, was not published until more than twenty years after his death. This is his blank verse translation of the Iliad (1825), brought out in book form in 1846)
