From 1997 David was a professor, latterly emeritus, at the University of Manchester. He went to the University of Hull in 1957, initially to study economics, but opting instead for sociology. He stayed on to undertake doctoral research into the "social and educational origins of Anglican bishops." He then joined a research project, at the University of Manchester, on social relations in a Salford factory, which kindled his interest in the sociology of gender. In 1964, David was appointed to a lectureship in the department of social anthropology and sociology. David's partner from the 1980s onwards was the sociologist Janet Finch. During her appointment as vice-chancellor at Keele University, from 1995 until 2010, they lived on the university's campus in Staffordshire, and David became an active visiting professor there)
