found: An act to dissolve the marriage of John Eliot, doctor in physic, with Grace Dalrymple, his now wife, and to enable him to marry again, and for other purposes therein mentioned, 1776:p. 1 (John Eliot, of the parish of Saint Clement Danes, in the county of Middlesex, doctor in physic)
found: Oxford Dictionary of National Biography online, viewed 1 April 2016(Eliot, Sir John, baronet (1733x6?-1786), physician, was born in Edinburgh, or perhaps in Peebles, on 15 April, probably between 1733 and 1736; after being educated in Edinburgh, France, and the Netherlands, he was apprenticed to a surgeon in London; he sailed as surgeon's mate and then as surgeon to a successful privateer; he graduated MD at the University of St Andrews in 1759 and became a licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in 1762; he married Grace Dalrymple (1754?-1823) on 19 Oct. 1771; in 1774 his wife began an affair with Arthur Annesley, Viscount Valentia, and Eliot began proceedings against his wife and Valentia for adultery; on 21 March 1776 he and his wife were divorced by act of parliament; he was knighted in 1776 and in 1778 was appointed physician to the prince of Wales; Eliot died on 7 Nov. 1786, while on a visit to his friend Lord Melbourne at Brocket Hall, Hertfordshire; Sir John Eliot must be distinguished from John Elliot MD (1747-1787), with whom he has frequently been confused; the latter's publications have often been attributed to Sir John Eliot, who, as far as it is known, did not publish anything)
