  • [Nevada State University was a state-supported institution of higher learning and research, 1881-1906.] It was originally established in 1874 as the State University of Nevada in Elko, Nevada, which was renamed as Nevada State University in 1881 and moved to Reno in 1885. In 1906, Nevada State University was renamed the University of Nevada. (The University of Nevada's Southern Regional Division at Las Vegas was established in 1955; in 1965, its name was changed to Nevada Southern University. In 1968, the University of Nevada System was established as a central body responsible for state-supported institutions of higher learning and research in Nevada, with administrative control over four divisions. Under the System, the University of Nevada became the University of Nevada, Reno.)
