Graduated from San Francisco State College with his BA (1954) and MA (1958). Taught at Colegio Americano in Mexico City, then from 1962 to 1964 he taught and was dean at the University of the Américas while completing his doctorate at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in 1964. Taught two years at Centro Venezolano Americano in Caracas (1964-1966) then a year at Yale, then was an art historian at the University of Texas at Austin (1968-1972) when he transferred to University of Texas, San Antonio.)
