  • [Harry Handly Caldwell graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1891. He served as Admiral Dewey's flag secretary aboard the cruiser Olympia. It was Caldwell who received notification that the Spanish American War had been declared and delivered the news to Dewey. He was present aboard the Olympia during the naval Battle of Manila Bay. During WWI, he commanded the Amphitrite, the guard ship of New York Harbor. After the war, in collaboration with his wife, Katharine Hilliker, he wrote plays and movie scenarios, and acted as production editor on many well-known films. He was the father of Captain Harry H. Caldwell, also a submarine officer in the U.S. Navy.]
