His perspective, his organizational activities and his international network were important for the development of art history in the Netherlands after World War II. To boost art history in postwar Holland, van Gelder founded the Nederlands Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek in 1947, which developed into a renowned journal. He remained a member of the editorial board until 1962 and founded the journal Simiolus in 1966. He was also an active member of the editorial board of Oud Holland.
