Graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1893, then received a PhD from Yale University in 1895. Taught history at Teachers College, Columbia University 1895-1896 and was an editorial writer for the New York Times. Joined the economics faculty at the University of Minnesota in August 1896. Named president of the University of North Dakota in 1909. In 1917, became president of the University of Kentucky. Wrote several books about history, economics, government and education. Died January 4, 1953 in Lexington, Ky.)
