- found: Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992:page 478 ("William Preston Johnston", lawyer and writer, born on January 5, 1831 in Louisville, Ky. Attended the academy of S. V. Womack in Shelbyville. Graduated from Yale in 1852 and studied law at the University of Louisville. Opened practice in 1853 in Louisville. At the outbreak of the Civil War Johnston joined the Confederate Army and was made a major, then a lieutenant colonel. After the war ended, he lived in Canada for a year, then returned to his Louisville law practice. In 1867 he became chairman of the department of history and English literature at Washington University in Lexington, Virginia. Then made president of Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge in 1880 then in 1882, president of the University of Louisiana in New Orleans, renamed Tulane University in 1884. He served as president of Tulane until his death in 1899. Wrote a biography of his father as well as books of poetry. Died on July 16, 1899.)
