He was born on June 17, 1929. In 1952, Simmons received the Charles Goodyear Medal. In 1976, Simmons served as chair of the organic division of the American Chemical Society. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. found: Howard Ensign Simmons, Jr. papers, viewed Nov. 1, 2024:Biographical Note (Howard Ensign Simmons Jr. (1929-1997) was an industrial scientist and the Research Vice-President in the Central Research Department of the DuPont Company from 1979 until his retirement in 1991. Simmons received his doctorate in organic chemistry from MIT in 1954, and joined the DuPont Company as a research chemist the same year. He was a research supervisor in the Central Research Department from 1959 to 1970, associate director of research from 1970 to 1974, and research director from 1974 to 1979. He was named vice president of the Central Research and Development Department in 1979. He retired from DuPont in 1991. He was an adjunct professor at the University of Delaware. He received several awards and honors including the National Medal of Science in 1992 and the ACS Priestley Medal in 1994.
