Bird was born in Boston, Massachusetts on 11 May 1928....Bird obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Harvard in 1951....In 1973 he co-authored with Peter Tompkins the Secret Life of Plants (first edition by Harper and Row). In 1979 he published The Divining Hand: The 500-Year Old Mystery of Dowsing (first edition by Dutton). Secrets of the Soil, also co-authored with Tompkins, was published in 1989 (first edition by Harper/Collins). All three books were published in languages around the world and in multiple editions.
