All four of his grandparents had been slaves in Tennessee. Graduated from the preparatory division of Knoxville College in 1926, in 1930 earned his BA from Virginia Union University in Richmond, VA and in 1931 his MA in history from the University of Michigan. Taught history, economics and mathematics at Louisville (Ky.)'s Central High School from 1933 to 1966, then 1966 to 1972 as an assistant principal at Parkland Junior High, Manley Junior High and Flaget High School, all in Louisville, Ky. A civil rights activist since his youth, Johnson fought for equal salaries for African American teachers to white teachers as president of the Louisville Association of Teachers in Colored Schools. In 1949, he was plantiff in the lawsuit that opened the University of Kentucky to African American students, and was active in several professional and civil rights organizations.)
