He was editor in chief of North Carolina Law Review, counsel for the Legal Defense and Education Fund (LDF) of NAACP (1963), director-council of NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund in New York City (1984), adjunct professor at University of Pennsylvania (1978-1986) and at Columbia University (1984-1992), chancellor of the North Carolina Central University (1992-2001), and member of the Prince Hall Masons.
