Returning to Georgia, he enrolled in Morris Brown College and Atlanta University, earning a B.S. in chemistry in the early 1950s. Worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture until 1962 when he resigned to work for King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Became a Republican in 1970, he ran unsuccessfully for the Georgia House of Representatives, then switched back to the Democratic Party in 1972 then served as state senator 1974-1984. Died in Atlanta November 16, 2000.)
