Enrolled at DePauw University in Indiana in 1953 where he was the only black student; graduated in 1957. Moved to Washington, D.C. and enrolled in Howard University's law school, graduating with an LL.B. in 1960. Returned to Atlanta where he worked for the NAACP. Moved to Arkansas and opened a law firm, later returned to Atlanta. Hired as the executive director of the Urban League in 1971. Shot and wounded by a racist gunman in Fort Wayne, Indiana, spent four months in the hospital, and decided to become a lobbyist in Washington, D.C. in 1981.)
