She earned her BA in Sociology from Xavier University of Louisiana (1969); worked as director of the U.S. Department of Labor Women's Bureau (1974), was chief of staff of the Democratic National Committee (1989), and head of the White House Office of Public Liaison, Secretary of Labor (1997-2000). She was also chairwoman of Human Resource Task Force of Coca-Cola Company (2001) and chair and chief executive Officer of New Ventures, Inc.. In 2005 she was appointed co-chair of the Democratic National Committee's Rules and Bylaws Committee)
