Brit.,c1972- : v. 13, p. 638 (Lancaster, Edmund, Earl of (1245-1296); fourth but second surviving son of Henry III, King of England, and Eleanor of Provence; founded the house of Lancaster; his nickname, "Crouchback" ("Crossback," crusader) enabled his descendent, Henry IV, in claiming the throne (1399) to assert that Edmund was really Henry III's eldest son but had been disinherited as a hunchback; b. Jan. 16, 1245; m. (1) Aveline de Forz and (2) Blanche of Artois, dowager countess of Champagne; d. Bayonne, June 5, 1296)
