He was one of the earliest students of Oberlin College in 1868. He was graduated from Howard University in 1872. Settling in Mississippi he formed a law partnership with D.T.J. Matthews. After serving a term in the Mississippi legislature, he settled in Memphis in 1885, where he was appointed assistant Attorney-General of Shelby County, Tennessee.
