Stanley was in London preparing for expedition; after Cairo, Suez and Aden, the expedition left Zanzibar on Feb. 25, arrived at Leopoldville Apr. 21; reached Lake Albert Dec. 13, manpower much diminished; Emin was not there; Stanley returned to Lake Albert on Apr. 2, met with Emin on Apr. 29 in good health; Emin Pasha interested in necessary elements for him to remain in Equatoria, while Stanley's goal was to bring him out; after a month, Stanley left, went to Zanzibar, met Germans as they approached the coast, met Germans, had banquet on Dec. 4 in Bagamoyo, during with Emin fell out of a 2nd-story window (took some time to convalesce); Stanley went on to Cairo, where he wrote In Darkest Africa; several of his group had died, expedition had dispersed; Stanley returned to Europe in May 1890, initially to acclaim, but later criticism as costs of the expedition became known)
