- found: Australian dictionary of biography, viewed online October 12, 2023(John Harford Reed; solicitor, publisher and art patron; born on 10 December 1901 at Logan, Evandale, Tasmania; grew up in the family homes in Logan (Tas.) and Mount Pleasant (Tas.); sent to Pinewood Preparatory School, Farnborough, England); attended Cheltenham College (Cheltenham, England); returned to Australia at the outbreak of WWI; returned to England to read arts and law at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University, graduating in 1924 (BA., LL.B.); further studies at the University of Melbourne graduating in 1926 (LL.B.); worked for the law firm of Blake & Riggall 1926-1935; setting up private practice in Melbourne; active in the formation of the Contemporary Art Society; abandoned his law practice in 1943 and with the Adelaide-based poet Max Harris established Reed & Harris (1943-1946) to publish the art and literary magazine Angry Penguins, begun by Harris in 1940 at the University of Adelaide; the firm also published a number of radical books; 1944, the year of the Ern Malley hoax perpetrated by Harold Stewart and James McAuley, the partners included Sunday Reed, John Reed's wife, and Sidney Nolan; With Max Harris and Barrett Reid, they launched a new publishing venture, Ern Malley's Journal (1952-1955); Using their own funds the Reeds transformed the Contemporary Art Society gallery in 1958 into the Museum of Modern Art (and Design) of Australia. John was its director (1958-1965) and their collection of Australian modernist art formed the core of the museum's holdings; In mid-1980 the Reeds and sold a large part of their estate Heide (Heidelberg (Vic.) and the bulk of their art collection to the Victorian government to form the nucleus of a new public art gallery, Heide Museum of Modern Art; travelled in Europe especially France to meet artists; died December 5, 1981 at Heide in Tasmania)
