He became "Sir Francis Beaufort" on being appointed KCB (Knight Commander of the Bath) on 29 April 1848; He died on 17 December 1857 at age 83 in Hove, Sussex, England. He is buried in the church gardens of St John at Hackney, London, where his tomb may still be seen.
