He graduated from Southern Illinois Teachers College in 1936 with a B. Ed. degree and attended the University of Illinois, receiving an A.M. in 1936 and a Ph.D. in 1941. During World War II, Young was an industrial relations analyst for the National War Labor Board 1941-45. Appointed to the Regional Wage Stabilization Board in 1951, he mediated wage disputes in Ohio and Kentucky during the Korean War. From 1948 to 1984 Young was a professor of economics and labor relations at Western Reserve University where he became a widely-known expert on urban transportation and the use of arbitration to resolve labor disputes ...
