Donovan, the authority on the biosystematics of New Zealand bees, has devoted much of his life to this subject. He completed a M.Sc thesis (University of Auckland, 1967) on New Zealand native bees and a Ph.D. (University of California, Davis, published as Donovan [1977]) on the taxonomic revision of Nearctic bees of the genus Andrena, subgenus Cnemidandrena, which comprise ground-nesting "solitary" bees similar to some of our native species. In New Zealand, he has undertaken many years of research on bee pollination, has worked on biosystematics of both overseas and New Zealand bees, and has published over 37 papers on New Zealand Apoidea.)
