found: Sumner Family Papers, 1875-1989, bulk 1900-1945:finding aid (Francis Bertody Sumner (1874-1945) was a professor of biology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. He received his undergraduate degree in 1894 from the University of Minnesota and Ph.D. in zoology in 1901 from Columbia University. Sumner was director of the Woods Hole Laboratory of the Bureau of Fisheries from 1903-1911. From 1911-1913, he served as the naturalist aboard the U.S.F.C. steamer Albatross, conducting a biological and hydrographic study of San Francisco Bay. In 1913, Sumner took a job at the Scripps Institution for Biological Research, (which became the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1925). Sumner worked at SIO until his death in 1945. The Sumner family lived in La Jolla, California.)
