Geddes; note: family emigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1837; he returned to Scotland in 1843 and then went to Calcutta, India, to study at the British Military Academy there from 1845-1847; served in the Canadian cavalry; resigned and moved to Iowa where he farmed and taught school; enlisted in the Eighth Iowa Infantry at the start of the Civil War and served until June 30, 1865; returned to Vinton, Iowa where he was superintendent of the Iowa Institution for the Education of the Blind, 1867-1869; then held a series of positions at the Iowa Agricultural College (later Iowa State University); b. at Edinburgh, Scotland March 19, 1827; d. 21 Feb. 1887)
