In 1946 he was awarded an Elsie Ballot Scholarship to Cambridge and went up to Gonville and Caius College. He read History and Geography and represented Cambridge at cricket and hockey. Back in South Africa he turned to the Law. He had a distinguished legal career; president of the Natal Law Society in 1976, a member of the Council of the Association of Law Societies of Southern Africa, a member of the statutory Board of Control of the Attorney's Fidelity Fund and twice a delegate to the International Bar Association conference)
