Taking his name from a work by German collage artist Kurt Schwitters, Merzbow launched his recording career in the late 70s with a series of cassettes for his own label Lowest Arts & Music. Although occasionally joined by fellow Japanese noise musicians, Merzbow's recordings are essentially the work of Akita, who oversees everything from the playing and producing to the collage artwork featured on the album covers. He has also released music under a wide range of pseudonyms, including Masami Akita, Abe Sada, Flying Testicle (with Yamazaki Maso and Zev Asher), MAZK (with Zbigniew Karkowski), SCUM, Tibeta Ubik (with KK Null), and True Romance.)
