She studied English language and English literary studies at Charles University (Univerzita Karlova) from 1948-1952, and she received her Ph.D. from Charles in 1953. From 1952-1956, she worked as an editor for Czech state publishers. In 1956, she became an assistant professor of English at Charles, becoming a full professor of English translations in 1977. She has translated English, American and Australian fiction, including literature for children. Authors translated include Malcolm Bradbury, Ray Bradbury, Erskine Caldwell, Richmal Crompton, Charles Dickens, Ellery Queen, Dorothy L. Sayers, Fay Weldon and others. In 1957, she translated Wilkie Collins' "The Moonstone" under the name Helen Karezová)
