He went to Jesus College, Oxford, where he was a scholar ... hewas called to the bar by the Middle Temple in 1892 ... became a King's Counsel in 1909 and in 1914 was promoted to the King's Bench. When Labour came to power in 1929, he was offered and accepted the Woolsack [Lord Chancellorship]. Sankey was made a baron in 1929 and a viscount in 1932. Sankey was a bencher of his inn, an honorary fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, and high steward of the university, from which he received the honorary degree of DCL. He died in London on 6 February 1948 and the peerage became extinct)
