  • [Joseph II, Patriach of the Chaldeans (1667-1713) was born under the name of Ṣlíbā d-Bét Maʻrúp in Tel Keppe (Iraq). At age 15, he was ordained as a deacon there, and then in 1689 he moved to Diyarbakir (Turkey), where he was a disciple of Patriarch Joseph I. Joseph I ordained him as a priest and Metropolitan of Diyarbakir, and in 1696, Joseph II succeeded his mentor as Patriarch of the Chaldeans. While in Diyarbakir, he studied Arabic, philosophy, and theology. He also copied manuscripts and wrote theology, poetry, and liturgical works. His writings were influenced by European thinkers, and thus he helped contribute to the Latinization of his community.]
