Caldwell, Charles, -1875

[Charles Caldwell (1831/1832-1875) was a leading Republican in Hinds County, Mississippi during the Reconstruction until his assassination on December 25, 1875. He was born to an enslaved woman and was an enslaved blacksmith by the time of the Civil War. After the Civil War, he worked to become a leader around Clinton, Mississippi and he was elected as one of the sixteen Black members of Mississippi's 1868 constitutional convention. After the convention, he became a member of the Hinds County board of supervisors. He gave up this position in 1871 to become a state senator. He was a leading figure in the 1875 election that effectively ended Reconstruction in Mississippi and his own term in office. He was ambushed in a grocery store in Clinton and shot several times.]
