Moved to the United States in 1905 where he was eventually hired as a porter by the Pullman Company. Founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) in 1925 with Asa Philip Randolph as its head and Totten as a key organizer. Retired to the Virgin Islands. Died January 26, 1963 in the Virgin Islands.)
