Totten, born in 1884 on the island of St. Croix in what was Danish West Indies (now U.S. Virgin Islands). Moved to the United States in 1905 where he was eventually hired as a porter by the Pullman Company. Founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP) in 1925 with Asa Philip Randolph as its head and Totten as a key organizer. Retired to the Virgin Islands. Died January 26, 1963 in the Virgin Islands.)
