Records, 1864-1972:finding aid, p.1 (Committee for Education of Freedmen (Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., Old School) merged with the Freedmen's Department of the New School Committee of Home Missions in 1870 to become the Committee of Missions for Freedmen; it was incorporated as the Board of Missions for Freedmen in 1883; in 1923 it was merged with other boards and agencies into the Board of National Missions; its work was taken over by two of that board's units, but the Freedmen's Board continued its legal existence as a holding corporation until 1972 when the Board of National Missions (under the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. since 1958) was reorganized as the Program Agency)
