Buschmann; printing and publishing firm in Antwerp, known for its bibliophile editions and prints; founded in 1842 by Joseph-Ernest Buschmann (1814-1853), a Luxemburger who had moved to Antwerp in 1838; purpose was to establish a Belgian literature, based on the country's bilingualism, and works of both Flemish-speaking and French-speaking authors were published; first address was Ossenmarkt 1182 (now no. 22); in 1850, because of Buschmann's poor health, the firm's operation was taken over by his wife (after 1853, his widow), who moved it to Israëlietenstraat 11; their sons Gustave (1847-1935) and Paul Buschmann senior (1846-1909) took over the commercial and artistic direction, respectively, in 1870; Paul Buschmann junior (1877-1924) took over the artistic direction in 1909, but ceded it in 1911 to his uncle Gustave Jos. Buschmann; firm published works of Hendrik Conscience and other Belgian authors, literary periodicals, and the illustrated art periodical De Vlaamsche School; firm remained in existence until 1978)
