Davis was born in Florence, S.C. to the late Garland McGregor and Mary McPhail Davis and attended public schools in Greenville, SC. He served his country in 1945 -1950 as a serviceman in the U.S. Navy and Reserve. After marrying Mary Monica Jackson in 1950, he received his Bachelor degree from Clemson in 1951, Masters degree from The University of Michigan in 1953 and Doctorate from Duke University in 1958. He then worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a tree physiologist, and joined the faculty of the Clemson University Forestry Department in 1960.
