Worked for the U.S. Fish Commission; then professor of natural science at Tabor College in Iowa, 1871-1892; adjunct professor of natural science at Beloit College, 1881-1883; professor of geology and mineralogy at University of South Dakota, 1892-1903; Special assistant to the U.S. Geological Survey, 1881-1909; Missouri Geological Survey, 1891-1892; Minnesota Geological Survey, 1892-1893; and was later the State Geologist of South Dakota. Arrived at the University of Kansas in 1907 and associated with the university until he died in 1922. Died October 29, 1922.)
