McLellin attempted to form a new church (under the name, Church of Christ) which advocated David Whitmer as the rightful president and prophet of the Mormon church. However, this movement failed to obtain Whitmer's support and shortly disintegrated. In 1875, Whitmer did form a successful church, also called the Church of Christ. Some sources indicate the church ended in 1905. However, in 1925, John J. Snyder (who led the church after Whitmer's death) and the remaining members united with the Church of Christ (Temple Lot))
