A student arm of Solidarity, it was banned together with it and other similar organizations after the institution of martial law on December 13, 1981; some activists were arrested, others organized an underground NZS. After the fall of Communism in 1989 it was recreated, with a shift in focus from political to cultural, and became the largest independent student organization in Poland, currently with 90 chapters)
