Built his first bridge on a road between Philadelphia and Briston, Pennsylvania. His successful innovations in long-span design led him to purchase a wood-shaping factory at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1824. Moved to Kentucky in the 1830s to improve the Maysville-Lexington Pike, for which he received several contracts for bridges as well as in the Bluegrass region. Built a house in Mays Lick, Mason County, Ky. in 1835. Most notably, he built a massive timber structure [known as the Camp Nelson Covered Bridge] across the Kentucky River south of Nicholasville spanning 241 feet, which he completed in 1838. Died at Harper's Ferry April 12, 1843.)
