This Tsimshian First Nation term was the original name given to the settlement that sprang up in 1834 beside Ft Simpson; many variations have been recorded, including Laxtgu'alaams, Lach Goo Alams, Lochgwaahlamsh, and Larhkwaralamps. The community was known for most of its life as Port Simpson; in 1986 the Geographical Names Office agreed to the Tsimshian band counci's request that "the village of Port Simpson be changed to its original Indian name of Lax Kw'alaams"; the post office name was changed the following year) Port Simpson (Port Simpson (54°35ʹ00ʺ 130°25ʹ00ʺ NW side of Tsimpsean Peninsula, N of Prince Rupert). The name refers both to a body of water and to a Tsimshian First Nation community. Originally the site of the historic trading post of Ft Simpson.
