Studied at Aberdeen University 1953-1960 and came to New Zealand in 1960 to work at the Animal Ecology Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Spent a year working in Kenya 1967-1968. Was deputy director of the DSIR's Ecology Division 1981-1985. Took redundancy in 1992 and did contract work through Ecological Research Associates of New Zealand (ERANZ).)
