Savage, Levi, 1820-1910


  • [Levi Savage (1820-1910) was a Mormon farmer, teacher, and soldier in Utah.] Levi Savage was born on March 23, 1820 in Greenfield, Ohio. He grew up in southern Michigan, but moved with his family to Nauvoo, Illinois following their conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He joined the saints in their migration west in 1846, and enlisted in the Mormon Battalion where he served until 1847. He married Jane Mathers (died 1851) on January 23, 1848, and they had one child together. Following his wife's death he was called in 1852 to serve as a Mormon missionary to the Far East. On his return journey to Utah in 1856 he travelled with the Willie Handcart Company. During the Mormon War he served in the Nauvoo Legion, and after the conflict he married Ann Brummel Cooper in 1858. He then moved to Lehi, and in 1865 further south to Toquerville, Utah. Savage died on December 13, 1910 in Toquerville.
