found: Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992:page 831 (Milton Hannibal Smith, railroad magnate, born in Greene County, New York on September 12, 1836. Grew up near Chautauqua, N.Y. and the family move to Shaumberg, Ill. in 1850. Began his long career in the railroads as a clerk and telegraph operator for the Mississippi Central Railroad in Holly Springs, Mississippi in 1858. Moved to Louisville in 1862 to work for the Eclipse Fast Freight Service of the Adams Express Company, then began to work for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad in 1866, resigning in 1878. Went to work for the Baltimore & Ohio 1878-1881 and the Pennsylvania Railroad 1881-1882 until he was appointed vice president of the L&N in 1882 and elected president in 1884 where he served until his death. He saved the L&N from bankruptcy during his tenure. Died February 22, 1921 in Louisville, Ky.)
